Congratulations! You have made an appointment with Green Lake Dental – the first step in optimizing your oral health. Now, let’s get you ready for your appointment.

There are a few things you will need to bring with you to your first appointment with a new dentist:

  • Dental Insurance Card if you currently have insurance
  • Driver’s License or other official form of identification such as a Military or State ID
  • Patient Information Form and HIPAA Consent Form
  • Relevant dental records

Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time in case there is additional paperwork to fill out.

If you tend to get extremely anxious visiting the dentist or have another reason to need premedication, call the office at least two weeks in advance of your appointment to discuss options available to help with anxiety.

Finally, allow at least 90 minutes for this first appointment, especially if it’s been a while since your last cleaning. Subsequent appointments probably will not take this long.

It is very common for people to be nervous about going to the dentist. If your anxiety causes you to avoid making appointments for cleanings or to lose sleep the night before an appointment, there are options to make it a less stressful experience.

At Green Lake Dental, we offer expert services in three different types of sedation dentistry: nitrous oxide gas, oral (pill form), and intravenous (IV) sedation. If you’re interested, here’s more about the sedation options we offer.

Nitrous Oxide gas, also known as “laughing gas” (though it does not cause everyone to laugh) is a relatively safe and effective way to relax you during or before a dental procedure.

Oral sedation is a pill taken prior to your appointment, either to help sleep through the night or calm you during your procedure. As the level of sedation with oral sedatives is different for everyone, you will need a driver both to and from the appointment.

Finally, intravenous (IV) sedation is available as a more adjustable and predictable form of anxiety relief. A calming drug mix is delivered safely to the patient, causing the patient to relax and maybe even sleep through their procedure.

Sedation is not needed for everyone and only a trained and experienced sedation dentist can help you choose the type that is right for you. Give Green Lake Dental a call with questions today.

Historically, dentists and insurance providers have recommended that everyone see their dentist for a teeth cleaning twice per year. In fact, how often you need to go to the dentist for a cleaning depends on a number of factors, including medical conditions, at-home teeth cleaning habits, and oral hygiene.

Those who already have gum disease should go to the dentist more frequently than twice per year, while those who do not have gum disease and practice good at-home habits (quality brushing and flossing) should be okay visiting their dentist every six months.

Talk to your dentist about how many visits you need per year to maintain optimal oral health.

Your teeth may be small, but they play a big part in your overall health. Not only is it critical to get your teeth professionally cleaned of plaque and stain buildup to prevent cavities but your dentist can monitor and treat any signs they see of tooth decay, dental disease, oral cancer or gum disease.

Some dental problems may not be evident to you on a daily basis but ignoring these problems can put your overall health in jeopardy. Schedule a visit to your dentist today.

Dental x-rays help dentists diagnose tooth decay, disease, and any other damage that may not be visible during a typical dental exam. While dental x-rays are generally safe, there are guidelines for how and when they should be used depending on a person’s age, health, and risk for disease.

The American Dental Association has distributed guidelines for dentists that adhere to the “ALARA” principle, or “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.” This means that dentists should be able to justify the need for dental x-rays, keep exposure to radiation as low as possible to still get a usable image, and always keep radiation doses well below allowable limits.

Green Lake Dental closely follows these recommendations for dental x-rays and with our use of digital x-rays, radiation exposure is much lower than traditional x-ray films.

Yes, yes, yes! Flossing may even be more important to your oral health than brushing (but you should still definitely brush).

Daily flossing helps prevent two dental issues: Gingivitis and cavities between the teeth. When you floss, you loosen and discard dangerous bacteria from the crevices between your teeth. If this bacteria was left to build up, they can irritate your gums, causing redness, swelling, and bleeding – which could then cause gingivitis or gum disease.

Flossing also helps prevent cavities between the teeth. The same bacteria that could lead to gingivitis or gum disease is also able to wear away the enamel of your teeth and form a cavity.

We recommend flossing at least once per day.

Knocking out a tooth can be shocking, but it is important in this moment that you stay calm and act fast.

First, rinse (don’t scrub) the tooth with water and, if possible, place it under your tongue or between your gums and cheek. Then, get to the dentist quickly – the tooth may be able to be replaced but only if it is done ASAP. If the tooth cannot be stored in the mouth of the person it came from, wrap it in clean cloth or gauze and put it in a glass of milk until you can get to the dentist.

Gum disease, sometimes referred to as periodontal disease, is a chronic or short term disease of the tissues surrounding and supporting your teeth. Gum disease can result from insufficient brushing and flossing, which allows bacteria (plaque) to develop and harden into calculus on the teeth. Plaque buildup can be avoided with regular flossing, brushing, and rinsing with a mouthwash.

The only way to remove the hardened calculus that has already built up is through a professional cleaning. At your appointment, the dentist will also assess your gum (periodontal) health to determine if you are at risk of gum disease.

For more severe cases of gum disease, when the plaque and calculus has built up enough to cause damage to the teeth and gums, the dentist may choose one of a few treatment options. Scaling and root planing are options to restore and protect the teeth and gums, more regular cleanings or skin graft/flap surgery may be performed to replace gum tissue on areas of advanced recession.

Gum disease is complicated and comes in many forms. The best way to treat gum disease is to avoid it in the first place – so don’t forget to brush and floss daily and visit your dentist for a cleaning twice per year.

Sedation dentistry is a convenient and safe solution for people who get anxious thinking about going to the dentist or while they are in the dentist’s chair. The idea behind sedation dentistry is to relax the patient enough so that the dentist can complete all necessary work during their visit.

Sedation dentistry comes in several forms. At Green Lake Dental, we offer nitrous oxide gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation options. Learn more about sedation dentistry or contact us to discuss your situation today.

Dental Implants are a safe and long term solution for missing teeth and have been around for more than 25 years. In fact, research shows that dental implants are the most convenient and reliable solution to missing teeth. They are also the closest replacement to your natural teeth.

A complete dental implant procedure is usually completed in two sessions. During the first session, a titanium appliance, or “implant,” is placed into the bone, where it can bond long-term just like the natural bond between the jaw and the root of a tooth. After the site has had time to heal, an artificial tooth is attached to the top of the implant at a second session.

This may surprise you, but you should start taking your child at just one year of age, or 6 months after their first tooth comes in. Be sure to schedule this first exam with a family dentist and let them know the age of the child and that this is their first visit. This is usually a quick and easy appointment where the dentist is able to determine growth and development and discuss ways to keep your children’s teeth healthy at such a young age.
